As an appellate court, the Supreme Court of Belarus reviews cases related to the death penalty. It can uphold or overturn a lower court’s sentence; for example, it overturned the sentence of Viktar Skrundzik.
Viktar Skrundzik, whose execution by shooting was overturned by the Supreme Court in 2020, was again sentenced to death by the Minsk Regional Court on 15 January 2021. It was the first death sentence handed down in 2021. On May 4, the Supreme Court dismissed Skrundzik’s appeal and left the sentence unchanged.
Viktar Skrundzik was executed by shooting on 16 July 2022. The sentence was carried out 13.5 months after the court’s decision.
